Carn

Court Tomb

This amazing grass-covered trapezoidal cairn is situated on top of a drumlin. At first glance only the stones that form the court and gallery are visible, but on closer inspection you can clearly see the outline of the cairn. The thirty five metre long cairn, is aligned NE-SW with a U-shaped court at the wider north-east end. The court gives access to a three chambered gallery over nine metres in length. The side stones of the third chamber are missing. Probably the finest example of a trapezoidal cairn is at Creeveykeel, in County Sligo, which has a full court.

The image above, was taken from the second chamber looking along the gallery toward the court. The two tallest stones are part of the court. Below left shows the whole court from the north-west. The image below right was taken from the court looking SW along the gallery, the furthest stone is the backstone of the gallery. The fence, near the cattle, runs along the side of the cairn. The court tomb and the outline of the cairn can be seen clearly on google maps.

The image above shows the western side of the first two chambers with the court to the left.

Situated: On farmland in the aptly named Carn Townland.
